Bank of Ireland has announced a new strategic partnership with Stripe that the bank has described as a key milestone in its digital transformation programme. The two companies will collaborate on accelerating payments innovation, streamlining backend operations, and integrating Stripe's AI-driven financial technologies within Bank of Ireland's core operating systems.

Bank of Ireland operates a full-service retail bank in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and is the largest provider of consumer foreign exchange through its partnership with the UK Post Office. Stripe, founded by Irish brothers John and Patrick Collison, specialises in payment processing and has been expanding into other areas of financial services and digital transactions.

Stripe already works with Davy, Bank of Ireland's wealth management and stockbroking subsidiary, and a similar arrangement is due to begin between Stripe and New Ireland Assurance, the group's life and pensions provider. Bank of Ireland has made recent progress on digital and payments capabilities, launching Zippay for instant mobile-to-mobile payments in March and an AI-driven Benefits Finder tool to help customers identify applicable tax benefits.

Conor McNamara, Chief Revenue Officer, EMEA at Stripe, said: "We've been working with Bank of Ireland Group for several years. Deepening that relationship is now about going further and bringing the same level of speed and reliability to other areas so they can move faster for their customers." Susan Russell, CEO, Retail Ireland, Bank of Ireland, added: "Stripe is a great success story, with a strong Irish heritage. We look forward to working with their team to further enhance our technology and accelerate AI integration to improve services for customers."

The structural driver is Bank of Ireland's move to embed a single fintech partner's AI capabilities directly into core banking infrastructure across multiple group subsidiaries, rather than procuring point solutions separately for each business line.

For the sector, this signals deepening reliance among Irish retail banks on external AI-native fintech partners to modernise legacy core systems, with group-wide rollouts across subsidiaries becoming the preferred model over siloed digital projects.
