Casting a spotlight on one of the standout contributors to last year's evaluation process, Denis O'Brien, Director of Standards and Solutions at GS1 Ireland, served as a member of the judging panel for the Digital Transformation & AI Awards 2025, bringing a career defined by standards-based systems design, global traceability leadership, and cross-sector digital implementation to the assessment of Ireland's most forward-looking technology initiatives.

O'Brien joined GS1 Ireland in 2012, having previously served as IT manager for one of Ireland's largest agri-food businesses. That transition from industry operations to standards development gave him an early grounding in the practical demands that digital systems must meet when deployed at scale across complex supply chains.

At GS1, he specialised in designing and implementing standards-based production and traceability systems, with particular depth in the food industry and healthcare sectors, while also developing solutions for manufacturing and niche sectors where traceability requirements presented unique technical challenges.

His contribution to global standards work was considerable. O'Brien chaired and served as subject matter expert on a number of international working groups and co-chaired the global committee responsible for producing the latest Global Traceability Standard, GTS 2.0, a body of work with implications for supply chain integrity across industries worldwide. His address to EU working groups and foreign governments, alongside regular appearances at international conferences, reflected a profile that extended well beyond Ireland.

His academic and professional credentials reinforced that standing. O'Brien held a Masters in Technology and Innovation Management from Technological University Dublin, received a Business and Finance Computer Professional of the Year award, and was honoured with the international GS1 People Make A Difference award for his work on TrackVax, a project developed as part of the National Immunisation Office's initiative to enable a safer and more efficient rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine across Ireland.

The Digital Transformation & AI Awards 2025 were held on 19 June 2025 at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire.
