Rewinding last year's excellence, Maynooth University was named winner of the Best Digital Transformation – Healthcare & Life Sciences Award at the Digital Transformation & AI Awards 2025, celebrated for its pioneering open-source electronic health record (EHR) project that combines technological innovation with social impact.

Developed in collaboration with IVI, HSE Social Inclusion, and OpenPlanIT, the cloud-based EHR system was rapidly deployed on a modest budget, co-designed with clinicians and patients to address real-world healthcare challenges. The platform has significantly reduced unnecessary A&E and GP visits while targeting some of Ireland’s most vulnerable communities, delivering measurable outcomes and supporting national digital health priorities.

Judges commended Maynooth University for demonstrating how digital tools can improve operational efficiency while directly benefiting patient care. “This project exemplifies how thoughtful, open-source digital innovation can deliver measurable social and healthcare outcomes. Its co-design approach with stakeholders ensures both usability and meaningful impact,” the panel said.

The recognition reflects the high standards of the Digital Transformation & AI Awards, where winners are increasingly distinguished by measurable results, strategic collaboration, and transformative impact. Maynooth University’s achievement illustrates how digital leadership, innovation, and user-focused design can deliver sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery.

The 2025 awards highlighted organisations across sectors that have successfully leveraged digital technology to drive operational efficiency, improve service delivery, and deliver tangible benefits to communities and stakeholders.
