Starling Bank has launched Starling Assistant for business customers, an AI tool integrated into its app at no extra charge, enabling small businesses to automate VAT ring-fencing, identify invoice fraud warning signs, navigate Making Tax Digital compliance and categorise spending from uploaded receipts. The launch follows a personal account AI assistant introduced earlier in 2026.
Starling Bank is a London-headquartered digital challenger bank founded in 2014, led by CEO Raman Bhatia. For FY2026, Starling reported group revenue of £887.4 million and profit before tax of £217.1 million, its fifth consecutive profitable year, with 6.2 million platform accounts and £12.7 billion in customer deposits. Starling holds approximately 400,000 SME business accounts, with 56% of SME customers using Starling as their primary bank. Starling acquired Ember, an accounting and tax platform, in FY2026 and launched an HMRC-recognised Making Tax Digital solution for sole traders and landlords. Starling Assistant uses Google Gemini on Google Cloud; customer data remains within Starling's own cloud environment and is not used to train models.
The structural driver is the intersection of two pressing SME concerns: administrative time cost and financial fraud risk. UK Finance estimated that invoice fraud cost businesses more than £41 million in 2025, with smaller companies disproportionately affected because they lack the dedicated finance team oversight that larger businesses deploy. Starling Assistant's invoice fraud detection, flagging changed payment details and prompting direct supplier verification, addresses a risk that is difficult to manage through policy alone in a business where one person handles procurement, finance and operations simultaneously. The VAT ring-fencing feature automates a task that sole traders handle manually, with calculation errors creating cash flow problems that could have been avoided.
The Making Tax Digital integration ties directly to Starling's Ember acquisition: a bank that can manage both the transaction record and the tax submission within a single app removes the accountant-mediated workflow that generates most of the administrative cost SME owners cite as a drag on productive time.
For the sector, Starling's AI assistant confirms that business banking product differentiation is shifting from account features to embedded AI workflow automation, the dimension on which traditional banks have the most to catch up on.
